According to the report, Shaw might be executed if found guilty because the Southeast Asian country has harsh drug laws and has executed some convicted smugglers by firing squad.

Since 2022, Shaw, 34, has played for a number of Indonesian League teams, most notably the Tangerang Hawks, prior to his arrest on May 7. 132 pieces of cannabis candies were discovered by police during their raid on his flat. The Associated Press was informed by Ronald Sipayung, the police commander at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, that Shaw was arrested after customs officers reported a suspicious item he had purportedly received from Thailand. If convicted, Shaw can receive a life sentence or the death penalty, according to Sipayung.

While Thailand decriminalized cannabis in November 2024, Indonesia continues to enforce harsh drug laws.

According to the article, Shaw was banned for life by Budisatrio Djiwandono, the chair of the Indonesian Basketball League, after being fired from the Tangerang Hawks.

Out of the 2009 class, Shaw was rated as a four-star recruit by Dallas (Texas) Carter. According to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, he was ranked as the cycle’s No. 11 center and 99th overall recruit. After signing, Shaw played for Oklahoma State for two seasons. As a limited contributor, he participated in 44 games overall.

Before the 2011–12 season, Shaw moved to Utah State. He spent two seasons as a starting center for the Aggies after redshirting. Shaw received a position on both the WAC All-Newcomer Team and Second Team All-WAC in 2012-13 after scoring a team-high 14.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. He averaged 14.1 points and 8.3 rebounds as a senior the next season in 2013-14, receiving honorable mention All-Mountain West.

During December 2013, Shaw was suspended indefinitely from Utah State for breaking team rules. When Logan police responded to a report at a residence close to campus, they charged him with felony distribution of a controlled substance and misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

He was sentenced to 10 days in the Cache County Jail and placed on 36 months of probation. The court allowed him to serve his jail time on weekends so he could continue his studies at Utah State. In September 2014, a judge granted an early release from probation to enable Shaw to pursue opportunities to play basketball internationally, according to reports.

In 2014, Shaw was not selected. Before playing for the Santa Cruz Warriors in the NBA G League in 2015–16, he began his professional basketball career in Turkey in 2014–15. Africa, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Uruguay, and Venezuela are among the countries where Shaw has performed professionally.
