An Epochal Open Letter from Shane Hawkins to Taylor Hawkins’ Fans and the Whole Foo Fighters Community
Dear Foo Fighters Family, Taylor Hawkins Fans, and the Entire Rock Community
There are no words to completely explain how grateful I am for each and every one of you. Over the last few months and years, you have shown my family and me an incredible amount of love, support, and strength as we navigate life without my father, Taylor Hawkins.
From the minute I walked behind the drums to honour dad, you embraced me—not just as his son, but as a musician carrying on a legacy that meant everything to him. That night at Wembley, performing “My Hero” with the Foo Fighters in front of thousands, was an unforgettable experience. It wasn’t just about the music; it was about love, healing, and the unbreakable tie that his spirit creates amongst us all.
My father wasn’t just a drummer; he was a force of nature. His enthusiasm, passion, and love of life were contagious. Whether he was on stage, in the studio, or simply hanging out, he gave his all to those around him. He was passionate about music, fans, and his Foo Fighters brothers. Even though he is no longer physically here, I am confident that his spirit will continue on via the music and all of us who carry his legacy forward.
Thank you, Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, and Rami Jaffee, for supporting me, being my mentors, and keeping my father’s spirit alive with every note you play. You have demonstrated what true friendship and brotherhood entail.
Thank you, fans, for keeping my father’s music, enthusiasm, and passion alive. Every tribute, drumbeat, and song performed in his honour reminds me of his enormous impact on the world. Your love has helped me get through the worst times, and I know it would mean everything to him.
As I pursue my own musical path, I carry his wisdom, fire, and passion for rock and roll with me. This isn’t the end; it’s a pledge to keep his spirit alive, to keep playing, and to honour the icon that was Taylor Hawkins.
With all of my love and gratitude.
Shane Hawkins
