Shaquille O’Neal has never remained outspoken when it comes to defending those he believes in. Angel Reese is no exception to the rule.

Reese, a promising WNBA star, has received severe criticism early in her first season. Some questioned her performance, notably during her shooting slump with the Chicago Sky.
But O’Neal, a fellow LSU alum and long-time mentor to Reese, isn’t going to allow the backlash go unanswered. He’s made it apparent that she deserves better.
Shaq recently lauded Reese for her toughness, reminding fans that she’s still adjusting to the professional level and has plenty of time to improve.
“Let her play.” “Let her learn,” O’Neal stated. “She’s already accomplished more than most.” His support spread across social media and basketball communities.
This is not the first time Shaq has advocated for Reese. During the 2023 NCAA Championship, he supported her after she was chastised for her on-court actions.
When media leaders such as Keith Olbermann criticised Reese, O’Neal did not back down. He described the criticism as hypocritical and asked people to promote young athletes.
He emphasised that confidence and personality should not be confused with disrespect. “She’s a champion,” he explained. “And champions celebrate however they want.”
Their LSU connection runs deep. O’Neal has taken a personal interest in helping Reese manage the pressures of fame and expectations on and off the court.
He’s offered her advice not just as a basketball legend, but as someone who’s navigated the spotlight at a young age.
Still, their relationship has had awkward moments. On her podcast, “Unapologetically Angel,” Shaq made comments about her looks that some found uncomfortable.
Fans were quick to point out the inappropriate tone, especially given his role as a mentor. Reese, however, handled it with professionalism.
She acknowledged the moment but didn’t let it affect her focus or respect for Shaq’s guidance. “We’re all human,” she later said.
Despite the hiccup, their bond remains strong. O’Neal continues to publicly cheer her on, urging fans to give her time and space.
In a league where pressure is intense, support from legends like Shaq can mean everything. For Reese, that support clearly hasn’t wavered.
