In a moment that speaks volumes about the importance of hard work, discipline, and all-around excellence, Texas Tech Red Raiders forward JT Toppin has been named College Basketball’s Top Scholar-Athlete, a prestigious award that recognizes not only athletic performance but also academic achievement and leadership. Along with the title, Toppin will receive a $25,000 reward, which he has already vowed to donate to educational projects in West Texas.
Toppin, a rising sophomore who impressed on the court this season with his athleticism, rebounding abilities, and high basketball IQ, has proven to be equally powerful in the classroom. He majors in kinesiology with a specialization in sports performance and has a 3.97 GPA, balancing the rigors of Big 12 basketball with a full academic load and team leadership responsibilities.

“This award is a blessing,” Toppin explained. “I have always thought that being a student-athlete entails excelling in all aspects of the title. Texas Tech has provided me with the resources and opportunities to advance in every way, for which I am extremely grateful.
Toppin was a constant starter for the Red Raiders, averaging 11.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game, establishing himself as a critical pillar on both sides of the floor. However, his humility, discipline, and unwavering work ethic have earned him the admiration of teammates, coaches, teachers, and fans alike.
Texas Tech Head Coach Grant McCasland lauded Toppin’s overall excellence, stating:
“JT is the type of player that every coach aspires to have: he is focused, selfless, and driven to excel at everything. He sets the tone in the locker room, at school, and throughout the community. This honor is really well-deserved.”
In addition to his prowess on the court and in the classroom, Toppin is noted for his leadership abilities off the court. He participates at child basketball clinics, advises underclassmen, and recently spearheaded a campus mental health awareness program aimed at student-athletes.
The $25,000 award celebrates a unique mix of academic brilliance, athletic prowess, and effective leadership. Toppin indicated that $5,000 of the award would be donated to a scholarship foundation for Lubbock’s needy high school students.
