Luis Guevara Mourned as Baltimore Orioles Grieve the Heartbreaking Loss of Their 19-Year-Old Rising Star

BALTIMORE, MD — June 30, 2025

The Baltimore Orioles organization and the broader baseball world are in deep mourning following the sudden and tragic passing of Luis Guevara, a 19-year-old rising star in the Orioles’ minor league system who was widely regarded as one of the franchise’s most promising young talents.

Guevara, a Dominican-born infielder known for his blazing speed, electrifying glove, and infectious energy, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday night. The cause of death has not been officially disclosed, and the Orioles have asked for privacy for the Guevara family during this time of unimaginable grief.

> “We are devastated by the loss of Luis,” said Mike Elias, Orioles Executive Vice President and General Manager. “He was more than a gifted ballplayer — he was a beloved teammate, a dedicated competitor, and a young man with a bright future ahead of him. Our entire organization is heartbroken.”

Signed by the Orioles at age 16 as part of their international scouting efforts, Guevara had quickly risen through the farm system, playing this season for the Delmarva Shorebirds, Baltimore’s Single-A affiliate. In just 42 games, he had impressed coaches and fans alike, batting .311 with 24 stolen bases and dazzling defensive highlights at shortstop.

Beyond the numbers, it was Guevara’s personality — vibrant, humble, and joyful — that left a lasting impact.

> “He had a smile that lit up the clubhouse,” said Shorebirds manager Carlos Medina. “He worked harder than anyone, always first to arrive, last to leave. He loved the game and everyone around it.”

News of his passing spread quickly through the Orioles community, with current and former players sharing tributes on social media.

Adley Rutschman, Baltimore’s All-Star catcher, posted:

> “Heartbroken beyond words. Luis was special. His dream was just beginning. Rest easy, hermano.”

The team observed a moment of silence before Monday night’s game at Camden Yards, with players wearing black armbands and Guevara’s No. 9 stitched onto their sleeves. Fans in attendance held up signs reading “#Forever9” and “Fly High, Luis.”

A vigil is planned for later this week at the Shorebirds’ stadium in Salisbury, Maryland, where teammates and community members will gather to honor his life.

Guevara’s death is not only a devastating personal loss to the Orioles organization, but also a gut-wrenching reminder of the fragility of life in a sport built on dreams. Scouts had already begun projecting Guevara as a future major leaguer — a player with the tools, mindset, and character to be a franchise cornerstone.

> “He had everything you could hope for in a player and a young man,” said Orioles international scout Ricardo De León, who first discovered Guevara at a showcase in Santo Domingo. “His future was limitless. We are crushed.”

As tributes pour in from across Major League Baseball, the Orioles will continue to honor Guevara’s memory, carrying his spirit into every game.

In a world where talent can shine so brightly and be taken far too soon, Luis Guevara’s name will not be forgotten.
