Breaking News: Elbow Injury Forces Wout van Aert Out of the 2026 Tour de France in Major Blow to Visma-Lease a Bike

 

Belgian cycling superstar Wout van Aert has officially been ruled out of the 2026 Tour de France after failing to recover from a persistent elbow injury sustained during a training crash. The injury later became infected, forcing the 31-year-old to undergo medical treatment and putting an end to his hopes of competing in this year’s edition of cycling’s biggest race.

 

Van Aert, one of the most versatile riders in the peloton and a key member of the Team Visma | Lease a Bike squad, had been expected to play a crucial role in supporting teammate Jonas Vingegaard in his quest for the yellow jersey. His absence now leaves a significant gap in the team’s plans for the Tour, which begins on July 4 in Barcelona.

 

In a statement released by his team, Van Aert described the decision as “a big disappointment,” noting that the Tour de France is one of his primary goals every season. However, after consultations with medical staff and coaches, it was determined that he would not be able to reach the required fitness level in time. The team emphasized that his health and complete recovery must take priority.

 

The setback comes after what had looked like a remarkable comeback year for Van Aert. Earlier this season, he claimed victory in the prestigious Paris–Roubaix and appeared poised to arrive at the Tour with strong momentum. Instead, another unfortunate injury has interrupted his campaign and denied fans the opportunity to watch one of cycling’s biggest stars compete on the sport’s grandest stage.
